The Department of Field Crops is one of the three founding departments of the Faculty of Agriculture, which is the founding faculty of Çukurova University. It has been conducting educational and research activities since 1970.
The Department of Field Crops conducts studies in four different disciplines: Cereals, Legumes for Forage, Industrial Crops, and Grass-Legume Forage Crops. Research is carried out on variety development breeding, cultivation techniques, and crop rotation suitable for the Çukurova and Mediterranean climate zones (including most products in the GAP Region) within each product group.
The educational goal of the department is to train Agricultural Engineers, Senior Agricultural Engineers, and Agricultural Specialists who possess up-to-date knowledge of agricultural engineering fundamentals and field crop cultivation and breeding. They are also equipped with the ability to apply this knowledge effectively and are capable of generating dynamic solutions to the challenges of field crop agriculture in a globalizing and highly competitive world.
The aim of the department’s research activities is to conduct basic and applied research to establish principles for the sustainable cultivation of field crops with high yield and quality, particularly in the Mediterranean ecology. These efforts are intended to contribute to the healthy and adequate nutrition of humanity in general and the people of our country in particular, and to facilitate the implementation of research results at the producer level.
In our department, there are 6 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 1 Assistant Professor, and 5 Research Assistants.
Undergraduate students have the opportunity to participate in research projects conducted in the laboratories of our expert faculty members during the semester and summer periods, thereby reinforcing their theoretical education through practical application. Our students are encouraged to pursue practical training at domestic and international universities and other research centers within the scope of both departmental and joint projects.
Our departmental program provides undergraduate students with the essential basic knowledge and practical skills required for a successful career. It ensures that they acquire all the competencies necessary to become researchers in basic and applied sciences, educators, or professionals in the food and pharmaceutical industries, agriculture, forestry, and health sectors.
There are a total of 3 classrooms equipped with modern teaching tools (such as projectors, slide machines, and computer-based data transfer). Two classrooms have a capacity of 30 people each, and one classroom has a capacity of 40 people.
Within our department, there are opportunities for domestic and international mobility through programs such as Erasmus, Farabi, and Mevlana.
We also have fully equipped laboratories for plant analysis, edible grain legumes, medicinal plants analysis, ecophysiology, cell and tissue culture, and molecular genetics, which are used for education, teaching, and research.
Within the Research and Application Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture at Çukurova University, there is a 250-decare Field Crops Department Practice and Research Area designated for conducting field experiments.
Graduates of the department are employed in public institutions in the agricultural sector, various private sectors (including seed and agricultural chemicals industries), and universities.
